Sciatica rehabilitation in Standish, Wigan

Assessment and progressive rehabilitation for sciatica and radiating leg symptoms, helping you find a suitable route back to everyday activity.

Understand your symptoms and your next step

Sciatica can cause pain, tingling, numbness or weakness through the buttock and down one leg, sometimes reaching the foot. It involves irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. Not all back or leg pain is sciatica, so assessment comes before choosing treatment.

How we approach it

We discuss your symptoms, how they have changed and the activities they affect. We assess relevant movement and function, check whether rehabilitation is appropriate and recommend medical assessment when further investigation is needed.

Support built around everyday activity

Where rehabilitation is suitable, we agree practical goals such as tolerating a walk, managing your working day or returning to exercise. Your plan may include activity advice, graded movement and progressive strengthening. Hands-on treatment may be used where appropriate as part of that plan.

We review how you respond and adjust the programme, rather than giving everyone the same stretches. Tell us about any change in leg symptoms or strength so we can reassess the next step.

When to speak to your GP

See your GP if symptoms are worsening, preventing normal activities or have not improved after a few weeks of self-care. We can help you discuss whether rehabilitation is appropriate, but a clinic appointment should not delay medical care.

Symptoms that need emergency help

Go to A&E or call 999 for symptoms on both sides; severe or worsening weakness or numbness in both legs; numbness around your genitals or bottom; or new difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder control, or loss of bowel awareness or control. These can signal a serious spinal problem. Do not drive yourself.
